A day-ahead grid limit, enforced in real time

In the Flex2gether pilot, the grid operator ewz set a power limit for a site one day ahead. kuafu kept the EV charging under it almost all the time.

The challenge

Grid operators want flexible loads to follow their limits when the grid is under strain. Before this pilot, no interface of this kind between a grid operator and an orchestration platform had been tested.

How it worked

One day ahead, ewz sent the limit through a SmartGridready functional profile. kuafu planned the charging for this limit, without limiting the users' charging needs, and enforced it in real time. When capacity was free again, kuafu released the charging it had moved.

Who does what: ewz, the grid operator, sets a power limit one day ahead and sends it through a SmartGridready interface to kuafu; kuafu plans the charging and keeps the site under the limit; Smart Energy Link connects the chargers with gateways and real-time data; Energie 360° runs the EV chargers on its site

Results

Compared with a reconstructed load profile without control. The site still met the charging needs of its users: 2.04 MWh in 112 sessions.

Results: time above the 80 kW limit fell from an estimated 420 to 45 minutes (about −90%) and energy above the limit from an estimated 72.7 to 3.3 kWh (about −95%)

What it shows

Through a standard interface, flexibility in buildings can reduce the load on the grid when the grid operator asks for it. This is the rule of grid planning in practice: optimise first, then reinforce. The next steps are more sites and more grid operators.
